Shake Move Grow announces its 2011 scholarship recipient

 By Alma Valenzuela

Margaret Mayes a graduate from “High School of Leadership at South Shore” became Shake Move Grow’s 2011 scholarship recipient. Margaret is the second recipient of the Shake Move Grow (SMG) scholarship award since the foundations inception in December 2009.

Margaret has not only proved academic excellence but has also demonstrated her participation in several extra curricular activities, one of which was the “Walk for Autism.” Margaret said she participated in the 2010 and 2011 “Walk for Autism” in Chicago but it was her participation last year that reinforced her career goal to become a pediatric nurse and children’s social worker.

Margaret said she has an interest in working with children because she does well with kids and also comes from a family with a lot of kids. Margaret said she has three siblings.

“I’m always the one they come to. I think they [kids in her family] trust me.” In addition, Margaret said she likes to help kids that are less fortunate than others.

But Margaret’s academic journey wasn’t always easy, she said the high school she attended was a “rough school with kids that had problems and they made it difficult to learn in that environment [classroom environment].”

Yet, Margaret said those “surroundings” and kids she was surrounded by also inspired and motivated her to succeed academically. She said for example, teachers had to spend time disciplining some students and that took time away from students that were eager to learn. Consequently, students that wanted to learn had to try harder and sometimes learn the material on their own, Margaret said.

Margaret is now on the path to achieving her career goal at the University of Central Missouri and her advice to kids and young adults is “always do your best and try to succeed more and beyond of what the standard already is.”

Shake Move Grow Announces Its First SMG 2010 Scholarship Recipient.

Shake Move Grow congratulates Daryl Johnson, SMG’s 2010 scholarship recipient.  Daryl is a graduate of the Chicago Bronzeville Scholastic Institute and will be attending Philander Smith College in the Fall 2010.

Hardworking, self-motivated and with a strong sense of obligation, Daryl has proven that he has the goods to succeed.  Raised on the south side of Chicago, he learned at a very early age the value of hard work and entrepreneurship. From lawn mowing to moving to washing cars Daryl never shied away from hard work.  His strong work ethic spilled over to his high school years where he was a Varsity basketball player with a 4.7 (5.0) GPA as well as a member of the National Honors Society and a part of the Academic Decathlon team.

Now college bound, Daryl Johnson will learn the skills needed to achieve his goal of entrepreneurship - he would like to eventually own and operate his own commercial dry cleaning business.

Congratulations Daryl!  SMG is proud to help.
